The Creed of Ahl al-Sunnah (AQD 101)

Seminar Description

In the famous hadith of Jibril, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was asked, “What is īmān?” He replied, “That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree – both good and evil.” In this seminar, students will learn the essential beliefs of Ahl al-Sunnah regarding these six articles of faith. Students will also explore some of the major differences between the various Islamic sects. Topics will include:

  • Difference between īmān and islām
  • Proofs of Allah’s existence
  • The Necessary Attributes of Allah
  • The Ambiguous Attributes & the Various Sects
  • Categories of Tawḥīd
  • Free Will & Divine Decree
  • Theodicy: Why Does God Permit Evil?
  • Necessary & Possible Attributes of Messengers
  • Infallibility of Prophets
  • Proofs of Prophethood of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم
  • Life in Barzakh
  • Signs of the Day of Judgement
  • Events of the Day of Judgement

Seminar Objectives

  • To appreciate the richness of the Islamic scholarly tradition
  • To distinguish normative Islam from its aberrant interpretations
  • To develop the ability to answer questions about Islam with clarity and accuracy
